Mystery Writing emphasizes three main areas of genre writing: Narrative, Informative, and Opinion. While the Common Core State Standards don't explicitly distinguish persuasive writing, the skills and outcomes covered in the opinion genre lay a solid foundation.

The opinion-genre lessons concentrate on a structure similar to persuasive writing, including an introduction (with a thesis and reasons), body paragraphs (featuring reasons and evidence), and a conclusion (restating the thesis).

Additionally, these lessons delve into aspects like point of view and craft techniques. These elements may include using transition words to support opinions or connect reasons, selecting words to convey emotion, urgency, or logic, and incorporating research to bolster arguments.
